The Good … and the Bad and the Ugly. … And the Good!

Good! Yes there are some good people1 in this old world. Yes, good music2 and art does make life worth living. Yes, “I love you grandpa!” from the likes of Owen; the energy and upbeat joy of Amelia, Lane, Landon and all of the grandkids, and their amazing intelligence, are injections of very much good in my own life. And Nature is “always solace.” And how could I have been so lucky to have a wife like Elizabeth “Betsy” Florence (Hoffmann) Martin, a Mom like Lousie Katherine (Kneuper) Martin, and a mother-in-law like Florence Mae (Sachtleben) Hoffmann, and had wonderful folk like Dad Alton, John Alton, Angie, & Jeremy Bain, Robert, Joseph, Pete, David, Lanier, William, Ruth, Peggy, Jim, Darryl, Marvel, Hilario, Alphonso, Helene & Waylon, Stick & Bob et al. around me and influencing me in my life? … and on and on?

On the one hand, it is a good world.

Bad and Ugly. On the other hand, currently there are eight billion humans and there were an estimated one hundred and seventeen billion over all time. That in and of itself is a serious problems since it has been (humorously, satirically) estimated that 90% of us are pendejos3. Moreover, I am personally trying to mill around and help us make the best of this inconvenient apocalpse4 This is despite the fact that I am quite certain that I am one of the more than seven billion pendejos currently living, and moreover, with reason great friends like Dr. Luis Campos da Silva5 and Dr. Miguel Altieri6 labeled me “burrão” and “huevon” respectively.

I will also add that at going on seventy-seven years of age … knees, ears, eyes, & muscles and the nervous, intestinal, cardiovascualr systems don’t function nearly as well as they did back ten to fifty years ago. Also, I continue to daily make and attack impossible lists of mundane gardening- and tidying up-duties, reading, writing, volunteer activities, and exercising to do.

******************************

This situation concerning self is indeed somewhat ugly. But let’s get on to briefly mention some of the very bad & ugly aspects of the immoral society7:

o The real problem in the process of solving problems … which must involve pacifism & anti-War activity, abolishing nuclear weapons, banning of guns and other weapons … is self-imposed ignorance in society; greed & a lust for power and stuff; and denial, apathy, and complacency. We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o As an immoral and unethical populace we kill each other and destroy dynamic homeostatic symbioses (nature). We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o Parents & businesses & governments & schools & even churches & so-called health care entities teach, practice, support, exemplify socio-ecologically destructive neoliberal capitalism/militarism/growth, encourage bad bidness & inappropriate entrepreneuership, and increase our propensity to being apathetical and complacent about our lack of knowledge/wisdom and values of positively ethical applied community ecology. We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o We accept agrilogistics8 and nonsustainable high input industrial agriculture which is necessarily addicted to ecologically-destructive synthetic chemicals and fossil energy. We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o More and more, lucky and powerful capitalists control the Land and the “Commons” and we largely and increasingly view water and other basic/essential natural resources as commodities rather than rights. We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o We view guns as a man-made right rather than an instrument in violating the Sixth Commandment.
We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o Plastics kill and destroy dynamic homeostatic symbioses (nature) and have really been around in common use for only about eighty years. Yet we deem them as a need!?! We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o Automobiles, air travel and cruise liners are major destroyers of ecological systems and we continue to use them despite the existence of alternatives, or potential alternatives. We don’t really practice the Golden Rule and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o Exotic, artificial lawns, and even PLASTIC turf, which displace dynamic homeostatic symbioses & sustainable climax ecological communities … are prevalent. We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

o I could go on with this list of destructive rampant artificialization (“Bad and Ugly”) which itself continues to “go on!” and on and on and on … . We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, MLK, Jr., Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

“christians?” Bullshit! … Humanitarians? ¡ Pura caca! … Stewards of ecological systems? Besteira!
We don’t really practice the Golden Rule, and Moses, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Mandela, Dorothy Day didn’t really change us … and this serious problem will continue.

Bad & ugly? Yes! But despite my “Bad and Ugly” pessimism, we can not give up. What makes life truly worth living is battling to deal with these unsurmountable challenges. We must be idealistic pragmatists rather than realistic pragmatists? Get your head out … !!! Fight toward equity and protection of the natural resources base. Curb human and domesticated species growth … and the unsustainable consumption of resources. Practice LISA/Low Input Sustainable Agricutlure and help move us toward matriarchal/campesino agroecological systems across the Eaarth (transforming to a neo-Earth). Realize that “Less Is More.” Care and Share!

…………………….

Good! Yes there are some good people1 in this old world. Yes, good music2 and art does make life worth living. Yes, “I love you grandpa!” from the likes of Owen; the energy and upbeat joy of Amelia, Lane, Landon and all of the grandkids and their amazing intelligence are injections of very much good.

It is a good world!

(Even though I have several potential “Bad and Ugly”-type posts scratched out here in our office, I will try to post more “Good” ones in the future.)

my department chair, dr. william conan davis, a man i respected

he was almost always objective and not subjective

we discussed much; and, dr. davis did sometimes express his dislike for my use of the term “fizzle”

even if my employment of it was just a drizzle

nevertheless, … i do strongly believe in a profoundly holistic ecological justice like my mentor dr. davis (who was ossie’s brother)

(and, as for these two, there will be no other)

i believe we should all look after all in this world

Me and My “Wonderful” Eaarth of PENDEJOS!!!

I recognize that I am a pendejo!  …  I realize I don’t have time for this!  I’ll get to work in more intelligent, sophisticated, respectful & PC way “in a minute”.  …  Again, I confess that I am a pendejo!!

……………………………….

This is from a little collection of fun articles (“Drink Cultura:  Chicanismo”, 1993) written by El Paso-raised Jose Antonio Burciaga:

Señor Armando Jiménez … is  …  Mexico’s foremost pendejólogo (pendejologist).  According to Don Armando, the number of pendejos, even as you read this, is innumerable.  …  The great majority of people regardless of class, color, or creed, are pendejos … .  His research studies claim that up to 90% of the world population are pendejos.  Of the remaining 10%, 5% are mentally unstable, .5% are geniuses, and 4% are unemployed—the exact amount needed for a sound economy.  The remaining .5% are lost.

According to Jiménez, there are countless categories and types of pendejos.  The following are but a few:

  • The politicos, who think they will change the world with money, charisma or speeches.
  • The hopeless pendejos, who blame all their problems on bad luck instead of the fact that they are pendejos.
  • The happy ones, who believe in their superiority over other pendejos who look up to them.
  • The dramatic pendejos, who can be identified at the distance of one block, by their stance and by the way they walk, sometimes carrying a book or two.
  • The pseudo-intellectuals, who act as if they are deep in thought on some theory when in reality they are wondering where they parked their cars.
  • The optimistic pendejos, who are naïve, happy, and talkative.  They look for hidden treasures, mines, underground water.  They also buy lottery tickets, bet on everything and believe in television wrestling.
  • The pessimistic or doubting pendejos, who don’t believe anything you tell them.  If you don’t believe this, you fall into this category.  And if you do believe this, then you fall into the category of those who believe everything.
  • Entrepreneurial pendejos, who have grandiose projects, are eloquent, and make great salesmen.  If this type convinces you, you are an even bigger pendejo.

This list may be used for self-evaluation, and to classify relatives, friends and lovers.  If you did not find yourself in any of these pendejo groups, congratulations!  This means you’re either a genius, unemployed or mentally unstable.  For those on the list, there is no known cure, but you are not to blame.  ¡Naces pendejo, mueres pendejo!”

**************************************

As a pendejo, I, “paul ‘vain/in vain’ martin” do believe we should abide by the Golden Rule, the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, the Precautionary Principle, Jason Hickel’s truism that “Less Is More,” and the statement of Wendell Berry in the photograph herein (below). As a life-long pendejo influenced by “christianity,” civil rights and ecological movements ,and the insanity of neoliberal capitalism, production of armaments, War, militarism, & soldiering, I do believe in socio-ecological justice, sharing and caring, communication toward true knowledge/wisdom/prudence/critical thinking & action, opening borders and tearing down barriers, fences, & walls, degrowth, and positively ethical applied community ecology/PEACE. I believe we should fight for equity and protection of the natural resource base. …

And of course as a card-carrying pendejo, I believe Donald Trump and his Trumpian/Trumpster supporters are the greatest PENDEJOS!!! of all time!

Yep! Pendejos unite! “Stand back and stand by!”… MAGA!!!/Make America Great Again!!!

Memorial Day Weekend-2023. (War, Militarism, Armaments, Soldiering is Hell!!! Not a Route to PEACE)

I want to see more holidays, memorials, statues, books, radio & television and magazine & newspaper pieces, social media posts, … celebrating PEACE, pacifists, conscientious objectors, peace activitists & PEACEmakers, Veterans For Peace1, diplomacy … . I tire of a country/an Eaarth of so much adulation of War2 in so very many ways, and I am sick of an economy in the U.S. largely founded on War and militarism with a significant sector producing armaments for the world … for capitalistic profit. (I also am nauseated by those who say that PEACE, equity, living in harmony with Nature, degrowth, … aren’t pragmatic. Obviously the alternatives are what are not pragmatic.)

My Dad, a Marine Master Sergeant in WW II who was at the Battle of Peleliu3 and who lost his brother in that War in 1945 in Germany, never glorified War, militarism, the use of armaments, or soldiering … and he became angry when others did. (In fact, my father rarely talked about War, other than short comments like the one when he was dying and viewed the events of the War in Iraq up on the television screen in his hospital room … “Damn, is the U.S. always going to be at War?”

1 Message from Veterans For Peace/VFP:

“Memorial Day 2023

As we do every year, this Memorial Day we remember all who have died in war and understand that no one wins in war. Many of us have been personally touched by war. But we must also extend that mourning. We remember the civilian victims, and their families. Honoring and remembering some deaths while ignoring others not only perpetuates war, but also ignores the moral injuries of war, a significant cause of veteran suicide…

We do not seek to glorify either warriors or war. Rather, Veterans For Peace seeks to educate the public about the folly of war and the costs of war – human, economic, political, environmental/climate. On Memorial Day, VFP members march in parades, lay wreaths, give talks and speeches, recite poetry, and vigil to honor U.S. service members who died in and as a result of war, as well as all the civilian victims of war….

Our message for Memorial Day is to remember all who have died in war and to understand that no one wins. We understand that those who fight the wars gain the least from them and those who send us to war gain the most from war. There are many people who either profit from war or are misled by war mongers and profiteers. These are the people who seek to block our message to question war and to work for peace. ” 2

Mother’s Day in South Central Texas, 2023

All you wonderful Mothers, and others:

I do hope you have/had a HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!

(Nevertheless on this day of celebration of motherhood … as we ride/rode through Seguin heading for Rio in Medina Co., Texas, the home of the formative-years of smiling/loving [my love] Betsy & home of my 94-yr-old Mother-in-law who lives alone on the hill over the Medina River …

and as I observe all this CRAZY/SENSELESS development and artificialization … and as once again (of many agains) I am reminded of our severely sick (and greedily sinful) addiction to consumption, neoliberal capitalism/militarism, and extraction from Nature,

I want all of you Moms (dear stay-at-home Mothers/home-makers, builders & handy-women and cleaners of homes & businesses, secretaries, musicians/songwriters/artists, lawyers, farmers, teachers, healthcare providers, and especially real estate developers, realtors, businesswomen, entrepreneurers … and soldiers, and those of many other livelihoods) …

who truly Care …

to begin to focus on study & learning of ecological principles & processes and moral & ethical values of “Positively Ethical Applied Community Ecology/PEACE.”

Please TRY to understand that this rampant real estate/business development, industrial agriculture, “plasticizing” & artificialization, and fastly expanding artificial coverage of/destruction of good farmland & natural lands (Thoreau’s Nature, Hardin’s Commons, Leopold’s Land) and our currently unbridled general developmental extraction from Nature (or dynamic homeostatic symbioses) lacks critical thinking and is socially & ecologically injust. … It destroys the essential foundational fabric of Nature on which we all depend and which is necessarily connected to what might be a sustainable social fabric … if it is truly for quality life for ALL, including future generations.

This sick artificialization destroys precious topsoil, pollutes the air, rids quality life of appropriate distribution of adequate quantities of quality water, reduces biodiversity and the processes for providing necessary photosynthetic-dependent net primary productivity and effective capture of daily solar energy.

This artificialization is simply not resilient or sustainable. It truly is unjust & sinful. We might modify the title of Niebuhr’s classic work which deals with our current state to: “Immoral & Unethical Man AND Immoral & Unethical Society!”
…………
Come on Moms et al.!!!

Abide by the Golden Rule, the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, and the Precautionary Principle … and other ecological principles & processes.

Put a stop to disparity/inequity (and WAR & mass shootings) and overshoot and drawdown of the natural resource base … and ecological ignorance.

Help lighten our individual & collective ecological footprints.

Truly love all life, recent & wannabe immigrants, all kinds of people, other species! Fight for gun control and antimilitarism and degrowth. Rid ourselves of big/wasteful, ecologically destructive homes. Rid ourselves of cars and do more walking, bicycling, & using of mass transport. Produce & process more local foods, and use more local products for fiber & shelter. Tear down walls and fences (including “Holistic Management” fences) and dissolve other barriers/borders.

Profoundly & holistically COMMUNICATE!

Always remember “Less Is More!”

Care … and Share!!!

Grandkid Memories … From the Past and Today/Grand Memories Which Will Stay

Forewords:

“We were born before the wind
Also, younger than the sun
‘Ere the bonnie boat was won
As we sailed into the mystic

Hark now, hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly
Into the mystic

Yeah, when that fog horn blows
I will be coming home
Yeah, when that fog horn blows
I wanna hear it
I don’t have to fear it

And I wanna rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then magnificently we will float
Into the mystic

When that fog horn blows
You know I will be coming home
Yeah, when that fog horn whistle blows
I gotta hear it
I don’t have to fear it

And I wanna rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will float
Into the mystic

(Come on, girl Too late to stop now)”

Into the Mystic* by Van Morrison

……………………..

When they read my thoughts … pensamentos … which are so often very rough, very tough; very, very profane, irreligious, & irreverent and antineoliberal-capitalistic status quo; so very raw. … My family and some friends wish I would disappear into a mystic, and that in their life my written words would be ones they never saw. … (These folk I do dearly love certainly don’t like my writing thuslyso fussily.) …

Au contraire, others like Ms. Ruth Allen, Dr. Dick Ridgway, Dr. Pete Lingren, the Coastal Plain Experiemtn Station-UGA, Tifton, Dr. Billy Ray Wiseman, Dr. Miguel Altieri, the National Beef Cattle Research Center, EMBRAPA-MS, the team with TDA Commissioner Jim Hightower, Roland Ruiz at St. Philip’s, Dr. Darryl Birkenfeld, Tim Barr, Dr. Nathan Martin, and Sylvia Manning encouraged me to write and take a bow … and to make my mark in the here and now even though the manner in which I employed my writing “skill” … may have not been to their will … or necessarily fit their bill … but in reality was for my own personal fill.

(All of this in the previous paragraph is why in part that I do these blogs … but on the other hand , I think, mostly in attempts to remove the fogs … from my own very personal mind which wishes to be profound and holistic; linguistic, stylistic, artistic, realistic, humanistic, ecologicalistic not Trumpian/Trumpster selfishly-narcissistic, –nationalistic, –imperialistic, -extremely-neoliberal-capitalistic, “flim-flamistic.” … But in reality I guess to float into the fogs of the mystic.)

Here’s a quick little piece which I hope will refresh us. … It is about some endearing life which yes! … it is so very precious!

…………………….

Though I have not really seen Mr. Ian, now at the University of Notre Dame, (nor his siblings Abby & William) … in a very many years

From the distant past my thoughts of Ian Bain’s loving play with his sister & brother, efforts at tee-ball and baseball and scouting, his musical performances at school and at GG’s burial service in Stockdaele-Texas two years ago … spending the night with him & Abby & William and taking them for a swim, kayak ride, and 22-target practice on The Farm … has brought me a lot of joyful tears

And the fun shenanigans of Abby, Ian’s twin (They are our oldest grandchildren!) around this old house at 605 Elm … and her innocent faith in the Easter Bunny & old St. Nick

Could so very contagiously make me very happy, and have me break out into a heart- & soul-felt laugh … real quick!

I once told my deceased-from-cancer (favorite) bro (called on SA TV “the Amazing Mr. Lawrence Martin”) that curly headed, quick-witted William was my favorite, i.e., a favorite of mine (paul bain) in the Martin chain

Though in our formative years Lawrence & I fought frequently & terribly over who was to milk the cow; nevertheless, Lawrence was always compelling, personable, endearing, & loving. and this crazy, daredevil, get-in-trouble youngster became a pragmatic and very successful, highly-respected principal in Northside San Antonio schools. (I have to admit that this shorter & a bit-over-a-year younger brother could out-work me any day!) … Anyway, from his bed at M.D. Anderson, though he recognized it as real, Lawrence chastised me super-quickly about expressing my grandkid favoritism with a: “You just don’t do that paul bain! … What’s right is for you to abstain!!!”

OK!?! But don’t have a (fought-over milk) cow

……………………

Moving on now

The other four (4) of our seven (7) beautifully wonderfully, amazingly intelligent grandkids (each in or almost in elementary school) I’m not prohibited from seeing

These magnificant-four treat this flawed grandpa paul vain (oftentimes “in vain”) like he might even be a caring/sharing living being

(“I love you grandpa!!! …

And … it is so very good … but be a little lighter on the honey in your homemade, hand-cranked (by us!) ice cream. You make it too durn sweet! … And PLEASE, PLEASE don’t feed me any of your nasty ol’ cole slaw!”)

So on to grandkids from which I haven’t been completely banned. … Hear ye! Hear ye! You just gotta love the wonderous Zane! … I mean Owen

And in intelligence, strategically & tactically smart chess-playing, languages (including the important one of science, mathematics), reading expertise, and smart futebol, he is magnificant … (rarely a pain!) and still growing

Owen’s favorite irmão Lane has both a focused AND a care-free spirit who like brother Owen also immensely appreciates reading … from books em espanhol ou em ingles. Lane Emerson will never be a lazy drone

He loves humanity and life! … and despite the rugged competition & tough love from his older & main companeiro Zane, Lane‘s confidence in all he does has grown … and grown … and grown!!!

And then there is Landon … such a smart and studious one who could someday be an outstanding scientist! … Well, he already is!!!

He teaches his ol’ grandpa paul thoroughly and completely. Landon will continue to go through life with a whiz … as a whiz

Finally (last, but CERTAINLY not least), today at school “five-going-on-fifty,” our borboleta Amelia performed like a star

A beautiful singing butterfly confidently strumming her guitar

……………

Of course these stories are a natural for me because I am a grandpa named paul

And though I perhaps worry about too many other things like PEACE & saving the Eaarth & “Less Is More” … you gotta know that deep down and emanating from very surface, I do love ’em all

As a waṡicu I do possess a considerable history of profanity, but in recent times the art of Ray Wiley Hubbard has showed me the way to a more appropriate irreverent form

For me … in my heart, soul, and little brain … Ray Wiley has made my life more of a norm

Ray’s helped me greatly in dealing with the BS emanating … from some of my family members … & from my Abbott/Patrick/Cruz/Miller-state of Texas 2; … from Trumpsters and many others of the immoral & unethical “right” (socio-politically), and … from much of the world which is lacking in a profound & holistic educational foundation of “positively ethical applied community ecology, or PEACE,” & not able to CRITICALLY THINK, DECISION-MAKE, AND ACT

AND THAT IS A FACT!!!

Three brothers told me to be more succinct or put on the lid

Therefore “profanely” with words learned in divine Devine-Texas early on from my Dad and from crusty old truck-drivers et al. when I worked pitch-forking green beans & feijão-Vigna around the old railroad platform during my elementary school days in the 1950’s … in a limited way, I did! 3

However, the irreverent words of Ray Hubbard are even more succinct than my own, … “Screw you, we’re from Texas” 4 … and though they may be lame

They keep me from going insane (Crazy, yes indeed, but not insane) 5

i survived pneumonia as a baby, landing on a picket fence while playing chase in an old live oak tree at the keilman’s place near devine-tx, falling asleep twice in one night at the wheel of a semi-trailer truck when i was ca. 16, an avalanche of cottonseed hulls in a dangerous feedmill at 17 years of age, poisoning by a carbamate cotton pesticide (aldicarb) in usda field-14 south of college station, a brief period in naval air and a couple of close calls in a t-34 & 28, and other near snuffings-out of my little insignificant but very fortunate life

i have been lucky to have done some writing of which i have some satisfaction in completing … a research paper on the boer war in ms. allen’s english class, a doctoral dissertation at uf on population dynamics of some interesting insects, a paper on action thresholds for fall armyworm in a sustainable agricultural system in the florida entomologist, a paper on “positively ethical applied community ecology’/PEACE across curricula & campuses at a conference of scholars & academicians, and the recent little book on applied ecology in english and (hopefully) soon to be out in portuguese … (and numerous other little referred and non-referred publications)

i have indeed been a fortunate son! i am grateful for what has been a very lucky life of great relationships & learning and fantastic adventure & enjoyment
