Bicycling In Hypocrisy

we humans are all so very hypocritical (including, especially, … me, myself, & i)

the plethora of ads for MORE, MORE, MORE

tell me we are entering into the season of peace on eaarth and good will …

while we allow a lion’s share of resources to go to War and/or preparation for War

and, ooohhhh, we all love Nature so very much

while we readily traverse the eaarth in so many damn cars

over a transport infrastructure of tremendously-CO2-generating concrete & polluting asphalt, etc., etc., etc. … which wipes out natural habitat & species

exotic foods from who knows where, more clothes than we know what to do with, large air-conditioned homes

disposable plastic bags; plastic cars, plasticized food, plastic clothes, plastic homes; plastic this and plastic that

this all takes huge amounts of socio-ecological destructive fossil material & energy

……………….

and now as i come to the end of this particular bicycle ride and pass by the “health-caring” guadalupe regional medical center

an army of health-destroying, fossil-fueled powered leaf blowers are attacking the landscape and spewing CO2 & hydrocarbons & and dust (& lots of noise) …

uselessly into the atmosphere

……………….

my far leftist friends are thumbs-down on joe & kamala (with good reasons)

nevertheless, i cannot help but “feel”

that trump, trumpians … and even trumpsters (most republicans???)

… are the epitome of hypocrisy

Death After Death. Thoughts As I Listen to Paul Auster Read About Crane’s Red Badge of Courage on C-SPAN Today

after quasi-suffocation unto death with an avalanche of seven foot of cottonseed hulls

what if don lawrence had driven around the block several times in 1964

rather than having rushed me in devine town’s ambulance & “temporary hearse” to doc’ peters’ clinic and then Santa Rosa in SA?

after an accidently self-administered lethal dose

of the cholinesterase inhibiting-pesticide aldicarb on a hot day in usda’s field fourteen south of college station

what if the nuns and doctors at St. Joseph’s hadn’t gotten the atropine into me in time?

(what if i hadn’t accidently righted my inverted-stalled t-34 during a loop-aerobatic over the waters of pensacola in 1969

and during t-28 touch-&-goes near brewton, alabama, after a very, very hard “touch” (i should have aborted!!!) i almost crashed into a bunch of pines*

and after a late night/early morning of drinking with three aggie marine pilots … still inebriated, I climbed into & flew a downed t-28 for my early morning solo

what if i had slipped during a precarious crossing on a cliff’s small ledge high in the carpathian mountains with polish friends in ukraine in the 1990’s

etc.,

etc.)

…………………….

well … there would have been death after death

i’d have ceased to be paul bain martin

i would not be the “toxic” gadfly i am … pontificating, bs-ing, telling stories ad nauseam, or writing crude poetry and essays

my beautiful wife betsy would have had a good possibility of a peaceful … or tormented … or maybe bland … or maybe absolutely marveleous life of love with another

in the case of possible deaths except in the carpathians there would be none of the pbm-gened grandkids and kids that i now see and love immensely

similarly there would be none of pbm-gened grandkids which i’ve been barred from seeing … and love immensely

sure! i/my potentially inherited matter/bonds of energy, would still be in some sort of part of dynamic homeostatic symbioses … or chaos

but in the sense of a paul bain martin?  no!

paul bain martin, somewhat consciousness of truth and justice and love, would be no more

but death after death–a recycling of matter and dramatic transformation of energy–is ok

for some period and in some places “life” or some kinds of energy plus matter will continue

the seeking of truth and justice and love and happiness will carry on

“Truth” will endure for all “time”

and in some sort of “space” …

whatever these dimensions might “truly” or “truthfully” be???

*******************

*Some of my Naval Air buddies and I saw on Naval Air Station Whiting Field the burned T-28 in which a young student pilot perished at the Brewton landing strip.  Also, during this period in which I was involved in Naval Aviation in 1969-70, we heard of a jet trainer and his student flying too low over the gulf, and after becoming disoriented, plunging to their deaths in the salty waters.

Notes to a Dear Friend Stimulated by a Recent Tom Friedman NYT Article Concerning COP 26

Opinion | The Climate Summit Has Me Very Energized, and Very Afraid – The New York Times (nytimes.com)

1.  Thanks so much Marvel!!!  I had not seen this Friedman article re COP26!  …

I do cherish our friendship, your love, & our collaborations … Siempre!  And rolling through my mind now are:

a. a possible letter to the local editors about a need … a call … for young HEB workers in Seguin to strike toward banning the SENSELESS use of all these damn disposable, polluting, fossil material/energy-generated disposable plastic bags (It would be one start–if a very small one!),
………….
b. a statement to the SISD school board next week about the good they are doing, but also … how much more the schools could do re curbing ecological destruction,
………….
c.  what I need to do concerning the support & realization of PEACE art/poster efforts in collaboration with the Seguin Art League & the Lions … which we discussed recently (i.e., work on a facilitating grant proposal),
………….
d.  the making locally with locally-grown fibers & distributed locally of some T-shirts which advocate a journey toward regeneration & conservation of resilient, sustainable ecological community.
………….
e.  pursuit of realizing another little book, before I pass, … dealing with the life of young friend Deyling Rizo,  Nicaragua, & the influences of the imperialistic power of the U.S.  … with a bit on the detrimental influences of global climate change (changes brought about largely by relatively neoliberal capitalism) on coffee production & other agriculture … and immigration.
………….
(I’ll try to use the wealth of knowledge of Nicaragua at UT-Austin, the connections of friends in the Somoza family, agroecologist Miguel Altieri, a priest friend in Leon, Dos Pueblos of NYC & Nicaragua, and of course the family of Deyling, etc.  …
………….
And I do hope to discuss this book idea with a retired UT professor & successful author in New Mexico during travels there in the next two weeks.)  …
………….
Yes, as Haitian (roots) artist Marika Bordes once emphazized … I do dream too much … vs. taking real action.
………….
2.  I DREAM big dreams of activism & action, but also realize that I am for the most part a relatively uneducated, not overly bright, lazy, inarticulate son of a relatively poor hog farmer from South Central, ” backwards” Texas, and that the reality is that I will accomplish very little. … Still, I plan to continue dreaming and trying..
………….
3.  Like Friedman, I too fear GREATLY for the TERRIBLE challenges we, but especially our kids and grandkids and their progeny, and even more particularly, the 3+ billion have-nots on Eaarth … will face.
………….
The threat they face are of course because of the ecologically-destructive actions/habits/ethos that WE of recent generations, especially after WWII, have lived, including growth of our “conspicuous consumption, (but also human & domesticated species population numbers), our global-industrial exotic, energetically unsound food & fiber-agricultural systems; large, air-conditioned homes & other built structures; crazy use of automobiles, including hybrids & electric ones (& especially big pick-’em-up trucks)  …  .
………….
I have to add here that I am as guilty as most … but that some of those close to me, daughter Angie & her family and brother Kenny & his family, do a pretty good job of living through a light ecological footprint … compared to say, paul bain martin.
………….
4.  I understand the (what I think is LIMITED) power of “prayer,” meditation, & religious communication as well as employment of APPROPRIATE technologies.
………….
Nevertheless, I was NOT very pleased with the emphasis Friedman gave in his piece to prayer and technological fixes.  Moreover, nuclear energy, which Friedman at least suggested as a transitional fix, costs tremendous amounts of fossil energy inputs for development, building, and security of reactors & associated structures for generation & delivery … before any net energy is realized.  And we need LESS artificial input/throughput/output involving energy transformation, not MORE!
………….
………….
5.  Finally (almost), the most important things we can do for immediate & more distant generations of humans are:
…………..
a.  Live lives of “Less Is More,” Steady-State economics, “Small Is Beautiful,” ” A Prosperous Way Down” proposed by Jason Hickel, Rice U. graduate Herman Daly, E.F. Schumacher, H.T Odum and various ecological economists et al.
…………..
b.  Set aside 50% of Eaarth to Nature & dynamic homeostatic symbioses as proposed by E.O. Wilson of Harvard U.
…………..
c.  Begin reducing the War- and military-  ( and “policing-“) budget/actions of the U.S., & that of the world, toward zero.
…………..
d.  a long- term dream/goal should be realization of a profound & holistic applied agroecology, which probably means a matriarchal agrarian society of local production, processing, & distribution … including appropriate technologies and in concert with dynamic homeostatic symbioses/”nature.”
…………..
6.  I’m sorry for the length and continuation of my redundancy in this.  Nevertheless, I suppose I’ll pass or my mind will totally fizzle out before I stop.
………….
Love,
paul

(Moral & Ethical) Individual and Collective Management of COVID-19

I’ve been around many Trumpsters, folk to the right of the political spectrum, anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers in the past few days who have been promoting, proposing, demonstrating, discussing their “knowledge” of “TRUTHS” about the COVID-19 “conspiracy” and/or unproven treatments … and even snake oils. I wish that I could justify diving into and thoroughly studying truly-scientific research results and writing a succinct & credible fact sheet concerning this; however, it appears that such is not going to happen. (I have too many other things pulling at my time & energy.)

Personally, I support actions which are in the first two URLs below, i.e., vaccinations, masking, social-distancing, plenty of sleep and good nutrition, and exercise and other prudent health care habits (and antibody infusions and remdesivir if considered necessary by a good, reputable, knowledgeable, and intelligent health care provider).

I do suppose if I were in a seriously threatening situation concerning COVID-19, that I might grab for other unproven treatments such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. However, OF COURSE! I would not consider for a moment, intake of sodium hypochlorite which Trump once (I think flippantly? … but dangerously) expressed. (I apologize for including this last stupid totally-psuedo-treatment proposed for action against COVID-19!)

In The New Yorker, November 1, 2021. A Call to Appropriate Local & Global Action. “The Nutmeg’s Curse”

paul bain martin lives in a different world than most, where he sees disparity, overshoot, and drawdown of the natural resource base as serious challenges to a dynamic homestatic symbioses (‘nature”) conducive to quality life for Homo sapiens.  He aches for a time in the few years left in his life-time in which there will be a concerted and significantly substantial effort of family and friends … and a critical mass of others … who might work in solidarity to truly address these challenges on our increasingly uninhabitable Eaarth and to quit so much farting around with, e.g.:

  • Black Fridays … and purchasing Christmas & birthday gifts,
  • materialism and consumerism, and
  • dollars ($) rather than energetics within a

  • technological fix,
  • transnational corporation market,
  • neoliberal capitalistic

  • world of rampant artificialization.

He yearns for: an ethic of … reciprocity (a holistic & profound abiding by the Golden Rule) & “Less Is More”; open borders and a true caring & sharing with others including other species; Positively Ethical Applied Community Ecology, pacifism, PEACEmakers. Games We Play (kite.pub)

…………………..

Amitav Ghosh is of like mind and expresses this in his “illuminating new book, ‘The Nutmeg’s Curse’ … .”  Our Planet Is Heating Up. Why Are Climate Politics Still Frozen? | The New Yorker

From the New Yorker review of Ghosh’s fascinating, enlightening, and alarming (wake-up call) new book …

“Given that the heedlessness of the global marketplace got us into the climate crisis, you might be skeptical that more of the same will get us out of it. But many governments have adopted a hair-of-the-dog approach, embracing market-based solutions such as emissions trading and carbon taxes. The results have been discouraging: global emissions have been rising quickly, and we’ve fallen short on nearly every indicator of climate progress. (The aim has been to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 or two degrees Celsius, in the hope of avoiding the most catastrophic scenarios of climate change.) Although market-based approaches can yield incremental improvement, there’s little evidence that they can produce the ‘transformational’ change that U.N. scientists say is necessary.”

“Although market-based approaches can yield incremental improvement, there’s little evidence that they can produce the “transformational” change that U.N. scientists say is necessary.”

“These victories aren’t on the scale of the challenges we face, and the political proposals may feel airily idealistic—more of a wish list than a to-do list. Still, getting serious about climate change”  …  “means aiming higher than defeatist ‘realism.’ Climate catastrophe isn’t going to be averted simply by our changing the way we think about the planet and its peoples—but it’s likely to arrive sooner if we don’t.”

HOPE (Hispanics Organized for Political Education)

HOPE_Legislative_Agenda_for_2013 (wordpress.com)

***********************

I very much appreciated the presentation by Joey Cardenas* last eve at the Seguin LULAC Council 682 meeting! (*Chair, Hispanics Organized for Political Education https://stacemedellin.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/hope_legislative_agenda_for_2013.pdf )
………………….
However, “stubborn and generally out-spoken” as I am, I must make a “couple” of comments re yesterday’s session.

1.I do have some understanding of Hispanic positions on issues re …

o job opportunities in & attractiveness of high-paying fields even though they may be very socio-/eco-disruptive & destructive, e.g. the fossil energy/material industry,

o gun rights and control,

o impact of recent immigrants in the LRGV & elsewhere,

o right to life & freedom of choice,

o good & appropriate education opportunities for Latinos,

o etc., etc.

… THOUGH CERTAINLY NOT THROUGHLY (e.g., the extremely complex differences in mindsets, ethos, & voting tendencies of: Latinos in the LRGV and those established further north; recent immigrants; Californians; folk in various barrios of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Miami, Dallas, San Antonio, … ; Miami Cuban-Americans; Mexican-, Puerto Rican-, Salvadoreño-Americans … rich versus poor, rural vs. urban, Catholics vs. Protestant evangelicals, young vs. old, etc., etc..

2. Nevertheless, I must strongly emphasize that …

o “rampant” global climate change (& causal elements such as number of humans/individuals of domesticated species & conspicuous consumption and results such as loss of biodiversity & net primary productivity, and sustainable local agriculture production),

o killings with guns especially suicides & within family- and friend-/neighborhood-units in society, … as well as

o disparity &

o extreme poverty … (and

o military power–armaments including nuclear, guns, soldiers, … and INEVITABLE War vs. rigorous diplomacy and pacifism) …

must be seriously addressed by Latinos in concert with a profound & holistic adherence to:

o an ethic of reciprocity (the Golden Rule),

o the Precautionary Principle,

o the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, and

o ecological principles, processes, and values

… and NOW!!!
