Some Big “Hoaxes”, More or Less in Order of Magnitude …

Some big “hoaxes”, more or less in order of magnitude …

o “Positively ethical applied community ecology/PEACE” is a pipedream.

Continue to live the life of a conspicuously-consuming neoliberal capitalist, go to church, believe in “God” & pray to “Him!” … and you will be blessed, in bliss, and in Heaven one day (after you pass).

o War, nuclear arms (arms period), military/soldiers are inevitable.

o Poor havenots are poor havenots because they are lazy and deserve to be poor havenots.

“America” tried to educate them and help them out–in places all over the world. But they are simply too lazy. Now they are the “ne’er-do-wells,” the homeless, the indigenous, the browns & blacks, the various ethnicities & and “other than Christian”, the “llegals”, the poor deservedly powerless havenots … which exist all over the world and now UNDESERVEDLY wish to exist within or want to come to … our greedy, exploitive, militaristic, Powerful nation to share in the resources we have accumulated with our tremendous “God”-given Power (via Land grabs, genocide, slavery, usury-/ponzi-/financial-manipulative-schemes, military might) here on Eaarth.

o Trump (as a good and moral leader, or leader period, who deserved the Power he inherited/accumulated in his lifetime).

o Fossil energy & materials.

o “More Is More!” We must have growth, growth, growth. To hell with limits.

(Oh come on … certainly we can (religiously) have infinite economic growth … big airconditioned homes, exotic foods/shrimp from all over Eaarth, glamorous clothes … on this marvelous finite planet. … You just have to believe.)

o Laissez-faire neoliberal capitalism bests highly/smartly-regulated capitalism or democratic ecosocialism.

o Reagan’s America/the American Dream/the U.S. was/is the “shining city on the hill.”

o Not to worry. Fusion energy will save us.

o Cryptocurrencies are better than the people’s government-backed monies.

o Technology is inherently good.

o Agriculture/agrilogistics is inherently good.

o Green energy is the answer.

o On this expansive Eaarth, cars, air travel, big recreational cruise ships are inevitable.

o Professional sports is good for “positively ethical applied community ecology/PEACE.”

o Human and domesticated species possible numbers should not be regulated. Anywhere. Humans and domesticated species belong “in the numbers wished” by the Powers than be … in all locales across the Eaarth.

o Space exploation is the answer to Eaarth’s challenges/problems.

o “Education” at large prestigious universities/schools vs. small socio-ecological learning institutions or environments/liberal arts & small “green” colleges is The Way toward “positively ethical applied community ecology/PEACE.”

(Many would say, “Yes.” Some would say, “No!” Others would say, “Maybe so?” Most would say, “It depends!?!”)

the real rock … a jewel. Betsy!

she is not perfect

none of us are

still i submit and wholeheartedly-know that rural texan Betsy is one of the best of the show

for me it is all genetic, epigenetic, and environmental (that is, this is the real “god”) and she was recipient of some of the best … agrarianism, largely 1960’s, civil rights/affirmative action/toward equity/pacifist/appropriate, applied ecological/steadfast matriarchal/americana music/flower people ethos, very decent genes influenced by a diversity of cultures, a solid formative-education

she has that Johnny Hoffmann-smile, his solid loving, very, very pragmatic persevering demeanor and Florence’s admirable steadfastness, interest in (family) history, and arts-and-crafts & culinary talents; she can be outspoken, but actually is always a sort of persistant mediator

Betsy is the real rock …

for 51 years with very difficult pbm; as a very young teacher at mostly black quincy high school; as a clerk typist with gator u. and an away-from-family first birth; canoeing all over north florida during those gainesville years; back home near “divine” devine town and the challenges of uncle peggy’s vigna-southern field pea, green bean, mung bean, popcorn games; away in tifton and two more away-from-family births; yes! a lovely, amazing, adventurous time in wonderful brasil (a $2.50/night “lovely” place to sleep in Corumba) and Bolivia (el tren de la muerte and altitude sickness in La [not so] Paz) , but far away from texas with kids who were two, four, and six .. and no car or plastic bags!; back to texas and a 140-acre dryland farm and a small 1946-built two-bedroom home in which pbm mixed milk-replacer in the bath, plowed all night/baled all day, and had his nine-year-old drive the big old international & the little ford and run the mower-conditioner & shred … ; she found & bought this ol’ early 1900’s home in seguin which served the rock’s family well

a rock in community as a waitress & bartender, as a teacher at seguin high for 20+ years, rescuing ‘nando, adopting into our home five lovely, loving brazilian youth; “retired’ but a rock for the hoffmann-martin family, as a social-club activist in clean seguin … still harvesting, processing, and bringing home the nutritious & tasty venison … and what a cook she is!; tent-camping and camp-stove cooking; working hard to appropriately celebrate special days with family; still appreciating and dancing to good americana music (is that betsy rock up there at the stage in gruene hall giving chris knight, charlie crockett, marty stuart & his band, kevin costner & his band … but mostly kevin costner, willie a big ol’ kiss?)

you must know that Betsy Florence Hoffmann Martin is the real rock of gibraltar, a jewel from out of Rio … Rio Medina

“life” in 2022

i have only myself to blame

still … I have no shame

or was it was dad & mom … those genes a-stringing?

and christian upbringing

genetics, epigenetics, ambience

four siblings, and brother Lawrence

not real needs, but wants

these are what my, our living system mostly flaunts

i have not cut warmongers or even ignorant, innocent soldiers slack

dynamic homeostatic symbioses, biodiversity, photosysnthesizers, quality life-giving water & topsoil, havenot-humans … we truly worry little about their backs

gotta keep neoliberal capitalism, consumerism, growth, artificialization, exploitation of others, of nature, … Wars … on track

(it was rice u. philosopher timothy morton who suggested symbioses was better

dynamic homeostatic symbioses more truly communicates “nature,”  didn’t you get the letter)

“you are a turd”

“that is besteira (bs) according to the science, the truth I have heard”

i did say that

as if i am always the only bit of biota at bat

but are we all that … a turd

mostly going along with the herd

still … listen!!!

those of you to the left, you who are apathetically complacent, knuckleheads to the right

(uh oh, i did it again

i so love to sin)

those of you in cars; wasteful air-conditioned mcmansions; eating meals from distant lands; soldiers of the red, white, or blue always wrapped up in a wrongful fight

a quest for basic needs yes …

but at least one-half billion of us have greedily perceived needs and should do with less

another maybe three billion truly must have more

even the beautiful, but in so many ways desperately needy, whore

(i hate that word “whore” and others we use derogatorily like it

but it rhymed  and seemed to fit)

we have needs of good nutritious food, appropriate shelter & clothing, basic sexual & recreational, leisure needs; physiological, psychological, sociopolitical, ecologically economic

but pleeease don’t overdo it, especially the atomic

(can’t forget about internal, familial, friendly local and global communication needs

more important than all the greeds)

why did this stream

like a very crazy dream?

the year 2022 started again without the family of my oldest son

january and february the wonderful land of lula and bolsonaro … and lots of fun

being with friends i haven’t seen in years

some of whom brought me, bring me to tears

a country of many kinds of loves which will last

and i am trying to not be crass

in 2022 i so wanted Honduras & Nicaragua to happen for me & ye

but it wasn’t to be

still I did get in a visit to deyling who fled to Wisconsin

he is on the way to being documented … and in

fifty-one years of marriage to elizabeth florence hoffman martin from rio!!!

yes indeed, it is hard to believe she would stick it out with me-o

the best of times were ecological activities with youth

“kids on the land,” generations indigenous ways, the outdoor learning center, master naturalists, grandkids …now that is the truth

and hey … ecology is the study of it ALL!!!

PEACE, Positively Ethical Applied Community Ecology … if you don’t believe it you surely will fall

city manager steve parker stirred me up considerably at a lulac banquet in seguin, texas with his worship of growth

(i am too hard on him

nevertheless, this is only a venial sin)

and out of it came numerous visits & presentations of local government meetings and i am sorry, but i am not much of a believer in patriotism or troth

and now the election sliding into not so holyday times

i think i am sick of the chimes

we need a revolution a systematic system change

but we are just not-simply getting much too much of the same

there is more

but i suppose i’d best run to the neoliberal capitalistic store

La Verdad. La Realidad. (¡¿¡Algunas Tonterías Enrevesadas! … Some Convoluted Nonsense!?!)

Forewords …

Vocês nos Estados Unidos teve muita riqueza monetária e poder

E bons tempos por um longo período”

Nós também queremos um pouco do que vocês tem de bom.

(You Haves have had it so very good in the United States.

We too want some of that very good you have had.)

My very best of friends, Dr. Luica of Brasil,

Was pointing out that through the destruction of:

Our climax & fire-climax ecosystems and high-on-the-road-of-ecological-succession ecosystems and sort of neolithic-agriculture ecosystems

(For example, exploitation of the Great Plains prairies and the southern longleaf pine ecosystem)

We in the U.S. rampantly converted Nature’s relatively soft & lasting power to artificial military- & marketing-power over others here on Eaarth

And subsequently lived the excessively consumptive, so-called good life.

Many decent humans in Brasil strongly feel

That they, logically, have the same right to do this with Amazonia & the Pantanal.

(To a large extent they have already done it in the Cerrado.)

………………………..

My poems generally do not rhyme.

But this one will … this time.

In other ways it’s the same ol’ same.

Perhaps that is pretty durn lame???

Against cars, plastics, asphalt, concrete, the military, War, industrial ag, and growth … someday, or some long-lasting night … I will win (Eight billion consumers, too many conspicuous, going on ten!!!).

Sure!  Eventually you do win … against sin.

But I must confuse

Because the terrible bruise

Is that in many sectors of McKibben’s very troubled Eaarth (Anthropocene Earth with two a’s) we have already lost and eventually, in all likelihood, ALL will lose.

Hence, from this perspective, basically I do lose the fight.

But for some durn reason I still sleep tight every night.

Nevertheless, I must say that, for stopping socio-eco destruction, there is probably no way.

Therefore, for me nightmares do constantly occur … especially in the midst of the day.

All through the year

I shed many a tear.

But despite crying

And inwardly dying

I suppose I continue to have hope.

Let me tie myself, and retie myself, to this dream; … please keep on giving me lots of rope.

………………

Some afterwords  …

All here on Eaarth should have learned ecological principles, processes, and concepts

And worked in solidarity for quality life for all, including other species.

We SHOULD be well on our way to

Positively ethical applied community ecology (PEACE) across curricula & campuses of all human organizational entities.

Like schools and libraries! and churches and businesses … and on and on

Across the globe.

But now instead that we face the inconvenient apocalypse, the virtually inevitable going over the cliff …

While milling around locally, and in all the local “mills” connected collectively across the globe

We forthwith desperately need to effectively listen, discuss, and learn in solidarity,

Critically think and strategically plan and take appropriate applied ecological action,

And then monitor, analyze, evaluate, and replan.

Keep milling around, effectively listening, discussing, and learning and acting ecologically in solidarity … .

Thomas Robert Malthus, in jolly old England,

Rachel Louise Carson, ecologist in the northeast of the United States

Garrett James Hardin from Texas,

Chico Mendes, activist for socio-ecological justice, Acre, Brasil,

Entomologist Paul Ralph Ehrlich of Stanford in California,

Berta Isabel Cáceres Flores, environmentalist & indigenous rights activist of La Esperanza, Honduras,

And yes! Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg of Sweden,

And especially polio-struck, one-armed tennis-playing ecological-economist, steady-state economist, Herman Daly of Houston, Texas, Rice University, LSU, Yale, & the World Bank, and other notable sites … who recently passed

They all knew, or know,

That this ecological milling around and ecological learning and ecological acting

In ecological solidarity

Is ecologically necessary.

Please!   Please!!

PLEASE!!!

Let us all know this!

And you try to tell me neoliberal capitalism is moral and ethical???

Are you serious!!!???!!!

Thanks to Sylvia Manning and Erica Reyes et al. for helping me attempt to communicate … and for Poetry Night, Seguin, Texas, November 17, 2022. And I hope to see Eddie Davila in the audience. Eddie will make a great city council-person. He has the genes and the supportive environment.

An Inconvenient Apocalypse (A Piece to Be Presented to Local Governmental Entities, Seguin & Guadalupe Co., Texas)

First I wish to thank my parents Louise and Alton Martin, my village in my early formative years of Devine, Texas, U.S.A., Pope John the 23rd, Martin Luther King, Jr., ecologist Rachel Carson, and ecological economist Herman Daly, a graduate of Texas’ Rice University, … and many other sociologists and ecologists … and great thinkers and teachers and writers … for preparing me, in my first 40 or so years after I was born in 1946, to understand our inconvenient apocalypse.

Most of what I present herein is not direct from this lightweight standing here before you (or directly from the blog-site piece I developed), but rather from two heavyweights, one is a geneticist and agroecologist and developer of a neo-perenniel agriculture in collaboration with Land Grant unversities like Texas A&M, who is one of Smithsonian’s thirty-five who made a difference in the 20th Century, … and the other an emeritus professor who facilitated real ecological learning at the University of Texas School of Journalism for many years. It is from their new book, An Inconvenient Apocalypse (2022, University of Notre Dame Press) … i.e., by Wes Jackson and Robert Jensen. (And by the way, one of my grandchildren is now attending the Catholic institution which published this amazing book and which was founded about the time that my Catholic Kneuper side of the family came into this country.)

Anyway, Wes and Bob tell us truly like it is and “it” follows. …

We “should be willing to speak apocalyptically, not to preach the end of the world, but to acknowledge that there is no decent human future possible within existing economic and political systems, that we are at the end of the age of those systems. The apocalyptic tradition demands that we face all the brute realities, without flinching and without false hope.”

Now. …

“While climate change is an existential threat, a focus only on climate change can be misleading. Climate disruption is a derivative of overshoot, of too many people consuming too much stuff in the aggregate. If a miracle solution to climate destabilization appeared tomorrow, we would still face multiple cascading crises because human demands on Earth’s ecosystems are in excess of those ecosystems’ capacity to regenerate in a time frame relevant to us. … “

“The goal of our planning can be stated simply and clearly: fewer and less. Fewer people, less stuff.”

“Because the obsession with growth defines virtually all economies on the planet, the bad ending will not be contained to specific societies but will be global. The response of the technological fundamentalists is simple: we need not curb our aggregate consumption as a species because we will invent whatever we need in a “green-energy cornucopia,” which some Cornucopians argue should include nuclear power ( [… }a bad idea).

The irrationality of this temporary evasion of the biophysical limits of the planet is captured in an old joke. A man […] jumps off a hundred-story building and, as he passes each floor, says to himself, ‘So far so good.” The experience of falling can be exhilarating, but at some point, the man will hit the pavement. Technological fundamentalists seem to believe that we can remain in free-fall forever through innovation.”

“We offer a conclusion that is well supported by the extensive evidence that is publicly available. The modern economy created by the Industrial and Digital Revolutions is not running out of time but rather has run out of time to correct the course. We should not be thinking about how to change our practices to allow this world to continue with nearly eight billion people with varying levels of access to high-energy/high-technology living. Instead, we should be planning for fewer people and less consumption, in smaller social and political organizations, with greater humility about tinkering with our surroundings.”

“Corrupt and craven leaders are a problem but not the main problem. Unjust and unsustainable systems are a problem but not the core problem. To face the multiple cascading crises that define this historical moment requires confronting our human-carbon nature and the forces unleased when we became a species out of content.”

We, … the foolishly growth-driven, fossil energy & material-addicted, arrogant, conspicuously-consuming, ecologically-destructive Homo hierachicus, Homo colossus, Homo technologicus … are the problem!

Corruption in Politics (Nothing New Herein)

What I jot down rapidly this morning in my attention deficit psyche is quite obvious and simplistic. But hopefully it contributes a bit to positively ethical applied community ecology, PEACEmaking.

Politics are corrupt because demos is corrupt*.

I could relate a story of my personal corrupt (political) activities, for example, while serving with Jim Hightower’s Texas Department of Agriculture , but won’t at this time. Suffice it to say that there was some corruption in the wonderfully amazing group of humans of all colors, sexual persausions, and economic status, etc. working to change the world under the direction of DeMarco** & Hightower.

I suppose I am democratic ecosocialist? And because of my perception of their ideologies, good intentions, and effective actions (and despite various levels of “corruption”), I will, or would, definitely vote for Beto O’Rourke, Lula***, Stacey Abrams, and folk of their political ilk in the current election cycle!
